We hope that you will take a couple of minutes to explore Basecamp, an online tool that Database Designs uses to help us communicate with you and your team, keep emails and materials organized and centralized.
How to Get to Basecamp
You don’t have to install any software, and you can access Basecamp wherever you have an internet connection.
Click "Client login" on the right sidebar of dbdes.com or click on the following link:
https://databasedesigns.projectpath.com
Here’s a tip: If you use bookmarks, bookmark the site and set your browser to remember your login.
Your Login and Password
We send you an email with your login and password. If you forget your password, or want to reset it, just click the “I forgot my username or password” link on the login page and follow the directions provided.
Who is Included in the Project?
In the right sidebar you will see a list of people who have been included in your Basecamp project. If you would like us to add anyone else, please contact us with a first and last name and email address.
Basecamp is used to centralize all email exchanges about a project. By sending and replying to all emails about your project using Basecamp, everyone will be able to keep track of issues under discussion.
To read all email messages, just click the “Messages” tab at the top of the Basecamp page.
Email messages in Basecamp are “threaded.” This means if you reply to an email, your comment will be listed along with all the other replies to the original email. This helps everyone to follow the discussion of the issue at hand.
If you want to start discussion of a new issue, you should try not to do it as a reply to another email. Instead click the button on the right sidebar “Post a New Message” or click the “New Message” link at the top of the “Message” page.
Send a New Message
When you want to send a new message through Basecamp, go the Basecamp page and click the “Post A New Message” button on the right. After you have entered the subject line in the “Title” field and your message in the “body” field, you can attach a file to the message if you like. Big files that might cause problems as a standard email can easily be uploaded to Basecamp.
Below that, you should be sure to check off the names of the people who you want to receive the message in their regular email Inbox. If you don’t check off any names, the email will be posted on Basecamp but no one will receive a copy of the email in their regular email account. While everyone on the team shown in the right sidebar can read all messages by clicking on the “Messages” tab at the top of the page, only people whose name you check off will actually get the email notification in their Inbox. This helps cut down on project members being flooded with emails that might not directly pertain to their role. If you want to send a private message, do not use Basecamp.
Replying to a Message
If someone sends you a message through Basecamp, it comes into your regular email program. To reply to this message you have two options.
Click on the link in the email which will look like
Link: https://databasedesigns.projectpath.com/P1234567890
This will take you back to Basecamp and you can enter your reply in the “Comment” box at the end of the message and click the “Send” button. You may be asked to login to Basecamp if you haven’t logged in recently.
- Or, you can type your reply right above the top line that reads: “Reply ABOVE THIS LINE to post a comment to the project.” You should delete any text, including email signatures, above this line to help keep the discussion thread easy to read. NOTE: Do not try to send attachments this way. If you want to post an attachment to an email, you need to use the first option above. Also, you will not be able to post new message threads so please stay on topic when using this option.
Uploading Files
There are two ways to upload a file from Basecamp.
- You can compose an email and right under the text box where you wrote your message, you can choose to attach a file and click the “Browse” button to find the file and attach it; or
- You can click the “Files” tab at the top of the Basecamp page, upload a file, and then choose to alert someone(s) that the file has been posted by attaching an email.
When uploading files, you may want to give some thought to renaming the file with a title that will be meaningful to others. Also, if you foresee revised versions of the same document being posted, put a date or version number as part of file name.
You can upload Word, documents, Excel documents, PDFS, photos. As noted above, Basecamp can handle large files much better than your email program.
And Lots More
There are additional cool features to Basecamp, (including the ability to upload a picture of yourself). Please explore. As your project progresses, we might want to introduce additional features, but these are the basics.
If you need additional help understanding how to use this tool, feel free to send us an email or give us a call. Don’t be shy.
